The -punk Subgenre

Recently, I’ve been searching for some definitions of “steampunk”. I just wanted to stop using the word without knowing more clearly where it came from, and what it refers to.

I happened upon this reference, which fleshes the whole -punk thing out nicely, along with a further brief essay on steampunk and related subgenres.

Incidentally, the writer J.E. Remey (who owns the blogs referenced above) writes in a style influenced by HP Lovecraft and Victorian literature. So I guess he has pretty firm grip on all things steampunk.

Nice piece of work here. You can even bid for it on eBay. I can’t decide though. Is this Clockpunk? Retro Mystical Victoriana? or just Harry Potter paraphernalia? Maybe I’m trying too hard.
